FUTURE FIGHTS

Will Egypt decriminalize homosexuality? Will Mauritania eradicate the practice of forced feeding? Will Qatar become more accountable regarding workers' rights? There a lot of work to do! Having analyzed the rude reality and created concern about the situation of the region, Millennials For team has done prospectives on how these issues will evolve. In short, mid and long term, the six current cases represent severe challenges for MENA countries. Nonetheless, "despite all challenges, activism doesn't surrender". Here you have our ideas regarding forthcoming fights.

WORKERS RIGHTS

In our latests project, he have given voice to migrant workers under the Kafala sponsorship system. Qatar's ambitions to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022 has become controversial regarding their deal with expatriates. Migrant workers' in the country must face extremely dangerous working conditions and violations of fundamental rights... Confiscation of passports, denial of freedom of movement, low wages and even death related to their work.

SINGLE MOTHERS

In Morocco, single mothers personify the feelings of shame and illegitimacy. They are suffering marginalization, exploitation and rejection from deep inequalities within the Moroccan laws. Most of these cases occur mainly in rural areas where there is a lot of social pressure upon them.

Many factors contribute to the rise in number of single mothers. Poverty, which leads to prioritising the work field above nourishing their education in all aspects, including the matter of sexuality. The consequences of such have made of a common lack knowledge that have allowed the population to be unaware of, for example, the dangers of having sex at early ages without condom, and as a result single mothers are rising.

SLAVERY

Although slavery was abolished in 1981, and later on, criminalised in 2008, it's still a problem in Mauritania. According to UN report of 2010, approximately 800.000 people out of 3.5 million total population is actually affected by slavery.

The basic pillar of human dignity, freedom, is still something unknown to approximately 23% of the total Mauritanian population. Some NGOs are fighting for the real abolition of slavery and also for those slaves who do not know how freedom looks like. Those NGOs are IRA Mauritania, SOS Slaves and Al Hor.

FORCED FEEDING

Not everywhere beauty stereotypes are based on being fit and skinny. In our third video, we want to show how Mauritanian women are forced to eat are force feeded so as to increase their possibilites on getting married at an early age.

These women are forced to ingest up to 15000 calories per day, trying to achieve a minimum of 100kg for their wedding day. And, although obesity is not a crime, it should not be promoted either.

CHILD MARRIAGE

In our second project we have given voice to girls under the age of 18 that are forced to marry older men. Throughout refugee camps in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt, girls are exposed not only to violence and hazardous living conditions, but also to a possible forced marriage. Organizations such as "CARE" and "KAFA" support and promote initiatives to stop this inhuman practice and give back girls their childhood and their hope.

LGBT RIGHTS

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transexual (LGBT) Community has historically faced several threats and challenges. In several of the cases, LGBT Community members have not been accepted by the society. While many countries have developed inclusive policies and reformed laws in favor of issues such as the legalization of same-sex marriage, many other countries still see homosexuality as a sin. In the Middle East and North Africa, LGBT Community member are not only seen as a dishonor, but also face hard labor punishment, imprisonment sentences and even death penalty. With our first video, we want to denounce the situation in Egypt, where homosexuality in legal, but prosecuted, and therefore denounce the precarious situation of the country.
